Don't Feed the Animals

Not our vehicle, but they hit our tent later.

UPDATE: the monkeys seem to have nabbed a few of our belongings that we left in the tent during the day, including the extra tent stakes, the small rain-fly (which we weren't using as there was no rain), and several bags(the tent bag, a bag for one sleeping bag, and both bags for our sleeping pads), and possibly a pair of Dickies pants which I haven't been able to find for a few days not. We made the right choice to keep most of our things in the car rather than the tent.

Quite a lot of animals in this area including deer, birds and some naughty monkeys. This campground at Khao Yai has been filled with monkeys and really messing around, getting into all kinds of things, and way too comfortable with people. At one point Pishcha opened up the car side-door, went to the trunk for just a few moments, then went back to the side door to find a monkey rooting around inside. When the monkey saw her he got spooked, grabbed our bag of cashews and jumped out the only door that was open, the one she was standing in front of.
Later on today we did some hiking around the park, just to return to see three monkeys in and around our tent, pulling things out, picking them up, and looking for food! I scared them away, leaving the car trunk open and when they scattered we saw another monkey in the trunk stealing bananas! We scared it away and moved our tent to be closer to other campers, hoping they would help us keep these buggers at bey. Actually the whole situation is quite funny in retrospect and we're laughing about it now as it was just too ridiculous.
This evening a deer, too, came to visit us in the dark as we were eating while sitting with the door open on our tent. It really spooked me when it came around the corner and, though it wasn't aggressive, it was hard to scare it away. Once that deer did move away, we saw it walk around to every other tent in the area looking for food scraps.
There are supposedly tigers and elephants in this park, too. I haven't seen any tigers today, but we found some elephant poop and areas in the forest where they had torn down a lot of brush.

  1. Thanks for sharing about your travels! It's amazing how bold the animals are in the area you are in. Good luck with the tigers and elephants!

    1. Thanks. Yes, the animals seem very comfortable with people in that park. Similar things occur in the USA with raccoons and bears which can cause just as much trouble, or more!
